The Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo (MAC USP) is a public university museum established in 1963. It is responsible for safeguarding, researching, and disseminating over 10,000 works of modern and contemporary art—both national and international—from the historical avant-gardes to the present day. The art collection is considered one of the most important at the kind in Latin America and, along with MAC USP's headquarters designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, is protected by national and local heritage regulations. In addition to the art collection, the museum preserves its own historical archives and houses a specialized visual arts library that includes the personal libraries and papers of artists and art critics. The museum has five floors and an annex dedicated to art exhibitions freely opened. MAC USP is a loan institution and contributes to exhibitions worldwide.
As a university museum, MAC USP offers undergraduate courses and graduate programs; organizes conferences, seminars, and workshops; promotes internships and technical visits for students and scholars; and provides collections guidance to researchers. It also supports scholarships and fellowships at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels through the main funding agencies in Brazil.
