Senior and Visiting Senior Fellowship Program
Senior fellowships (usually nine-month appointments) and visiting senior fellowships (up to sixty days) are intended for those who have held the PhD for five years or more or who possess an equivalent record of professional accomplishment.

A. W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
The postdoctoral fellowship is for two academic years. Each year of the fellowship carries some teaching responsibilities. Applicants must have received the PhD no more than five years before the application deadline.

Predoctoral Fellowship Program
Predoctoral fellowships of one to three years are awarded for doctoral dissertation research in specific fields. Application for a predoctoral fellowship may be made only through nomination by the chair of a graduate department of art history or other appropriate department. Candidates must be either United States citizens or enrolled in a university in the United States.

Predoctoral Fellowships for Historians of American Art to Travel Abroad Program
The travel fellowship is intended for doctoral students in art history who study the art and architecture of the United States, including native and pre-Revolutionary America. It is meant to encourage a breadth of experience beyond the candidate's major field, with preference accorded to those who have had little opportunity for professional travel outside of the United States. It is not for advancement of a dissertation.
