Association of Research Institutes in Art History

Background

The Association of Research Institutes in Art History (ARIAH) was incorporated in 1988 to promote scholarship by institutes of advanced research in the history of art and related disciplines; to provide general information about the scholarly activities of its member institutes; and to develop cooperative projects and programs. It currently consists of 28 member institutions.

Each ARIAH member institution grants residential fellowships of varying duration to senior and junior scholars in the history of art and related disciplines. See Member Institutions for information about these programs.

One of ARIAH's earliest cooperative projects was a fellowship program in the history of art and architecture and related fields for scholars from Latin America. This pilot program provided research fellowships at ARIAH institutions to scholars from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, and ran from 1994 through 1999.

ARIAH continues to look for new initiatives that will promote art historical research throughout the world, and encourage interchange and collaboration among research centers internationally.
