Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center

The Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA) is a nonprofit exhibition and research center established in 2013 in New York City to promote public appreciation and advance the study of modern and contemporary Italian art in the United States and internationally. Each academic year, CIMA presents a focused installation that features the work of thought-provoking artists rarely seen in the U.S. Presented in CIMA’s intimately scaled gallery space, the exhibitions foster close analysis, encourage direct and durational interactions with the works of art on view, and offer opportunities for a diverse range of programming. The exhibitions also serve as the theme for CIMA’s fellowship program, which aims to promote new scholarship and dialogue in the field through the support of emerging scholars from around the world. Fellowships last either one semester (4–6 months) or the full year (9–10 months) and citizens of all nationalities at the doctoral and post-doctoral level are eligible to apply. The intention of the program is to bring together researchers from diverse academic backgrounds in an interactive and collaborative environment at CIMA’s New York location. Emphasis is split between individualized study—gaining an intimate knowledge of the artists and art on display through close looking and through researching in depth a topic raised by the installation—and public discourse, as represented by collaboration on public programming and leading interactive exhibition tours. The New York-based fellows then have the opportunity to present the results of their research at an annual scholarly conference at CIMA, whose proceedings are ultimately published in CIMA’s online journal.  In addition, CIMA supports a Travel Fellowship each year to candidates residing outside of Italy to study in Italy, and an Affiliated Fellowship in collaboration with the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, an artist residency program in a 15th-century castle in Umbria, Italy.
