Center for Creative Photography

The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona offers research fellowships on all aspects of the production, exhibition, conservation, reception, and interpretation of modern American photography and visual culture. Awards are based on merit and the need for physical access to original works of art and primary material. Preference is given to pre- and postdoctoral scholars or individuals who have a record of professional accomplishment to help them carry on significant research. Proposals from qualified individuals in disciplines other than the history of photography are welcome.

CCP is the world’s largest archive of modern North American photography comprised of over 100,000 fine prints by major photographers together with over 5 million archival objects documenting the lives of photographers, the production, use, and meaning of photographic images, and the visual culture of American social, political, environmental, and technological history. Among the archives at the Center are those of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind, W. Eugene Smith, Garry Winogrand, Lola Alvarez Bravo, and the Light Gallery. Visiting researchers also have access to a library of 10,000 books, exhibition catalogs, journals, and artists’ books plus AV recordings of over 600 interviews and lectures by photographers, curators, and historians.

The Center is an academic art museum and a research institute that promotes lively discussion and scholarly research through its exhibitions, public programs, and publications. Contemporary photographers, curators, and critics from around the world are hosted throughout the year for public lectures and informal seminars. Tucson is a destination city with very affordable temporary housing and excellent weather. More information, including an application form and deadlines, is available at:
