| The
Getty Research Institute is a program of the J. Paul Getty Trust,
an international cultural and philanthropic institution devoted to
the visual arts in their humanistic context. The Getty Trust also
includes the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Conservation Institute,
and the Getty Grant Program. The Research Institute serves education
in the broadest sense by increasing knowledge and understanding about
art and its history through advanced research, exhibitions, scholarly
publications, public lectures and performances, seminars, and conferences.
The collections of the Research Library include over 800,000 monographs,
periodicals, and auction catalogues relevant to the history of art
and architecture and related fields in the humanities. Holdings in
special collections include manuscripts, archives, rare books, prints,
photographs, architectural drawings and models, and two million study
photographs. The Research Institute offers grants to outstanding scholars,
artists, and other cultural figures from around the world who wish
to use its collections and participate in its programs. It awards
four types of grants, all through an open application process. The
three main types of grants are awarded to applicants based on how
their projects relate to a particular theme chosen by the Research
Institute. Successful applicants participate in the Research Institute's
Scholar Year: Getty scholars are in residence at the Research Institute
for the academic year, visiting scholars for one to three months,
and predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows for two years. While in residence,
Scholar Year participants pursue their own projects, make use of the
Research Library, discuss one another's work in a weekly seminar,
and take part in various aspects of the intellectual life of the Getty.
A fourth type of grant, the Library Research Grant, offers short-term
support to scholars who need to use the collections for their research.
The Getty provides support to institutions and individuals through
a number of other residential and nonresidential fellowships. Please
visit the Grant Program section of www.getty.edu for more information
about Getty grants. |
