The Center for Advanced Study supports research in the history, theory, and criticism of art, architecture, and urbanism of all cultures and epochs. Members of the Center have access to the National Gallery’s collections, its library of more than 225,000 volumes, photographic archives, and other services, as well as access to other libraries in the Washington, D.C., area, including the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespeare Library, Dumbarton Oaks, and the libraries and collections of the various museums of the Smithsonian Institution. Senior fellowships are offered to scholars who have held the Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) for at least five years or who have a record of professional accomplishment. Application may be made for awards for the academic year (September–May), a single academic term (September–January, January–May), or two-month periods throughout the calendar year. Predoctoral fellowships of one to three years are awarded for doctoral dissertation research in specific fields; nomination is through the candidate’s graduate department (certain restrictions apply). Predoctoral applicants must be American citizens or be enrolled in a university in the United States.
