Art and visual culture of the United States

The Smithsonian American Art Museum supports research fellowships on topics in art and visual culture of the United States. Predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships are awarded in an annual competition administered by the museum and the Smithsonian’s Office of Fellowships. Other types of appointments, with and without stipends, are available to scholars. Research resources at the museum include an unparalleled collection of art of the United States—more than 40,000 objects—from the eighteenth century through the present day; an extensive study collection relating to the work of Joseph Cornell (1903–1972); a library, shared with the National Portrait Gallery, that contains 180,000 catalogued volumes on American art, history, and biography; the Inventories of American Painting and Sculpture listing information on more than 380,000 paintings and sculpture in public and private collections around the world; and slide and photographic archives of a quarter million images documenting American art and artists. The application deadline is January 15 for awards beginning the following June 1.
