| Established in 1894 and
chartered by an Act of Congress in 1905, the American Academy in
Rome is a center
that sustains independent artistic pursuits and humanistic studies.
Each year, through its Rome Prize Competition, The Academy awards
residential fellowships to pre-doctoral and post-doctoral candidates
working in Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern, and Modern
Italian Studies. Fellowships are also offered in Architecture, Landscape
Architecture, Design, Historic Preservation and Conservation, Literature,
Musical Composition, and the Visual Arts. The Academy’s 130,000-volume
library ranks among the world’s richest holdings of classical
art history and archaeology, ancient history, Greek and Latin languages
and literatures, Roman topography, epigraphy, numismatics, and ancient
religions. The library also has strong collections on Italian art
and architectural history, rare books, and a broad range of periodicals.
The Photographic Archive contains more than 100,000 photographs and
negatives. Included in these holdings is the Fototeca Unione collection,
which documents ancient Roman architecture and topography in Italy
and the Roman provinces, as well as several rare historical collections.
The Rome Prize fellowship is awarded to 15 artists and 15 scholars,
for periods of six months to two years. Each recipient receives room,
board, and a study or studio, in addition to a stipend of $10,500
to $21,000. The application deadline is November 1 for fellowships
beginning in mid-September of the following year. |
